We are a team of a faculty, specialists, student staff, and alumni who work together to support current Science Tokyo students. Our diversified backgrounds enable us to encourage our students fulfill their academic lives proactively and smoothly through multifaceted approaches.

Our consultation covers a wide range of topics regarding academic life such as study plans, course registration, etc. Faculty and staff members of the Student Support Center who are assigned as Student Life Coaches will answer your questions.

Face-to-face consultation is provided on Ookayama and Suzukakedai campuses. We also offer online meeting upon a request. Please refer to the “How to arrange a consultation” section. English is available for international students.

You may have questions and concerns such as:

“Which courses should I take?”
“Have I acquired enough credits?”
“How can I determine a timetable for the next semester?”
“I do not really understand course registration procedures.”
“I want to do more than just study at Science Tokyo. What activities are available?”
“I want to ask someone other than my professor members or friends their opinions about my studies or research.”
“I have concerns about my studies/research, but do not know whom I should ask.”
“I am reluctant to consult my professor.”
“I want to think about my studies and future options - which major/laboratory to select, studying abroad, career path, and more.”

Sessions are held in early April to guide newly enrolled students to swiftly adapt to academic life, understand our curriculum, and pursue their studies on their own. The sessions cover a broad range of essential topics such as our academic programs, course registration, history and accomplishments, significance of undergraduate studies and what you should keep in mind, and various consultation services available on campus. New students will also have a chance to meet other members within the same academic unit.

Orientation sessions for newly enrolled undergraduate students for AY 2025 took place on April 6^th at Taki Plaza and Tsubame Terrace.

The sessions are held in spring and autumn for incoming students in master's and doctoral degree programs (both in English and Japanese).
Student Life Coaches provide an overview of the education system at the Institute, explain factors common to all courses, show various academic options, and introduce our wide range of counseling services. Then, Career Advisors give some tips on career development. Current graduate students also share their experiences and useful information at Science Tokyo. This is followed by job-hunting circumstances around international job seekers in Japan, which is explained by a Career Advisor. International students interested in working in Japan are encouraged to participate.

Spring 2026 orientations for incoming graduate students will be held on March 27 and March 28 using Zoom Webinar.

A session for transfer students in undergraduate programs is held in early April, prior to the start of the academic year. This is designed to assure transfer students to swiftly adapt to their academic lives at Science Tokyo and pursue their research activities later in their undergraduate programs. The session will exhaustively cover essential topics such as Science Tokyo's curriculum and course registration, tips for developing study plans for attaining degrees, and various consultation services available on campus.

At the consultation booth on B1F of Taki Plaza, student tutors provide a variety of support services.

Tutoring is available for questions and consultations on mathematics, physics, reports, writing assignments, MATLAB, etc.
For example:
✓I am struggling with a class assignment.
✓Even after reviewing, I still don’t understand …
✓I am not very confident about the progress of my self-study.
✓Although there were things I wanted to know more about, I could not ask questions during class.
✓I would like to discuss the concept of my report assignment.
✓In order to use MATLAB, I need to know how to start.

The tutor, who is a senior student of our university, will kindly support you in solving problems on your own through dialogue.

Our consultation covers everyday matters surrounding international students. Our aim is to help international students fully enjoy an on-and-off-campus life in Japan.

Any kind of questions are welcome! (anything you might be curious/concerned about, things you are hesitant to ask your friends, or even finding out where to ask for a specific inquiry, etc.)

We hold seminars where students can deepen their studies as well as gain a broader perspective or extend their studies through extracurricular learning. Seminars are open to all Science Tokyo students.

Interested in learning about Japanese culture, history, and/or life through informative walks? You may find answers to subtle questions or wonders you may have encountered in your Tokyo life. The guidebooks below were created by Professor Hiroshi Yamaura from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering of the School of Engineering. It illustrates and explains all sorts of things that may catch your eyes en route of the walking plan. We hope international students new to and are keen to learn about Japan find them useful. They may also come in handy as a tool for interactive communication between Science Tokyo domestic and international students when discovering/discussing the differences between Japanese and foreign social structures.

This walking route takes two to four hours on average, starting at Science Tokyo's Ookayama campus and going along Nakahara Kaido.

On this route, you will start at Kokkai-gijidomae Station or Tameike-sanno Station on the subway, visit central facilities of judiciary, legislature, and administration in Japan. The tour ends at Mitsukoshimae Station on the subway. With no detours, the distance of this route is about 9.5km, so it should take about 2.5 hours by foot.
There are also several recommended places where you can stop by, so if the weather suits, you can enjoy the complete version that should take about 3 to 4 hours.

The support services available at the Student Life Coach service desks started in line with the 2016 launch of (then) Tokyo Tech’s new education system, and are aimed to help undergraduate students, especially in their first year, to understand the Tokyo Tech curriculum at the time and swiftly adapt to academic life, and pursue their studies on their own.

Tokyo Tech introduced a new education system in 2016, aiming to grow individuals capable to learn and think for themselves. The new system is designed to encourage students to independently set and pursue their goals, and eventually become able to contribute to a global society. We expect our students to learn that technology and research is fun and profound, and plays a vital role in changing and shaping society.

Student Life Coaches provide support based on a diversified and multifaceted approach to encourage each one of our students to help decide the path they will take under the new system and lead a fulfilling academic life.
